Position: Shipping Manager – Oceania Trades
Location: Honiara, Solomon Islands.
Responsible to: Branch Manager & Regional Manager
The position requires an industry person with a mature attitude with the ability to take on responsibility, focus on the job at hand and at the same time relishing the challenges of this very interesting role.
This is a leadership management role covering most areas of international liner /tramp shipping and freight forwarding, leading a small team. The position requires an enthusiastic shipping person, proficient in Liner Agency day to day operations.
The successful applicant will be proficient in IT and strong written and spoken English, possessing great communications skills and enthusiasm to get the job done right the first time!
In brief, the department handles our 14 day frequency, PIL liner vessel calls from Asia & Papua New Guinea plus monthly tramp tankers. Plus oversight of our freight forwarding activities.
Scope:
The position is a commercial and operational role requiring the successful applicant to be a good communicator to liaise easily with shipping line principals and local customers. The role heads up an experienced local agency team.
Sales: (The shipping manager must be customer focused)
- To co-ordinate sales activities of staff/branch, personally visit key accounts. Follow up leads to principle’s satisfaction.
- Export; to personally take charge of export shipments, developing key account contacts and support for the principals & EFM.
- Personal involvement in dealing with shipping principals and customers for all commercial issues. This requires sound industry knowledge and communication skills to secure cargo nominations, replying to and relaying information together with problem solving.
Customer Service:
Oversee the existing team’s performance, ensuring timely follow on day to day commercial issues and enquiries. Constantly endeavour to lift the performance of the team.
Documentation:
- Oversee the import documentation staff, ensuring work flow and document readiness is on time and better than industry standards.
- Oversee the export documentation team, ensuring bills of lading, cargo and freight manifests are completed promptly on-time and error free.
Port Operations:
- Working closely with the operations team, personally boarding each agency vessel upon arrival to visit the ship’s Master together with the port agent.
- Maintain close hands-on involvement with the agency team/Ports/Stevedore as to vessel’s operation, progress & ETD.
- Involvement in port operational matters for vessels, liasing with the port officials, stevedores, the vessel and the principals as to the vessel’s programme of loading and unloading cargoes.
Container Control:
Supervision of container control staff and operations ensuring procedures are correctly followed and all movements and control are reported on time.
Inter-face with the Team:
As a manager, daily inter-face be early morning staff meetings to set the guidelines and parameters of the day's activities. Be that operations, sales and documentation matters, problem solving with a team approach. Leading a team, holding meetings and providing skilled guidance, setting bench-marks and prioritising issues together with on the job training of staff ensuring their level of competency is maintained and improved.
Inter-face with other Departments:
Due to the industry mix within Express Freight Management there is substantial daily inter-face with the other departments being Customs/Transport, Accounts.
The Right Person:
The successful person needs a strong commercial background, have good liner shipping industry experience and knowledge, can meet deadlines. They must lead a team and be hands-on.
