Simberi Gold Company Limited forms part of the St Barbara Group. Our Simberi Operations consists of an open cut mine on the northernmost island in the Tabar group of islands in the province of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. We are currently seeking a Shot Firer to join our team, permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 21/14 Roster from Kavieng, Rabau, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Vanimo & Wewak or Tabar group of Islands. (Locals are encouraged to apply).

Reporting to the Drill & Blast Supervisor.

The main purpose of the role is to supervise and undertake blasting operations as directed by the Mining Engineer and in compliance with industry safety standards and the Company’s safety and environment policy and procedures.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities

  • Supervision and execution of all activities associated with blast holes charging and ensuring that blasting operations is carried out in a in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Maintain industry approved mining / compliance standards as set out by SGCL whilst performing daily activities, e.g., pre blast security clearance of blasting area and post blast inspections and clearance.
  • Ensure blasting is executed in a manner that maximises productivity and minimises production loss / down time.
  • Collaborate with drill and blast engineers to produce optimal Blast pattern tie up plans.
  • Ensure blast pattern meets the standard required, for barricading and authorization of entry.
  • Ensure that all unused explosives are returned to the magazines storages and accounted for
  • Ensure all blast returns are compile and return to the drill and blast engineers
  • Manage and maintain explosive magazine to the required standard in terms of signage, earth testing, explosive stock bookkeeping etc.
  • Maintain clear record of all explosive inventory (received, used and returned).
  • Ensure that a proper weekly stock take of all high explosives, detonators and other accessories is carried out and a correct inventory is maintained in the high explosives & detonators register.
  • Produce weekly explosive magazine inventory report to logistics team.
  • Carry out blasting QAQC and contribute to recommendation for improvement and support execution of recommendations.
  • Maintain a high level of vigilance on the daily issues and inventory control on high explosives, detonators and other accessories.
  • Carry out investigation and or support investigation on incidents.
  • Provide documentation and reports on issues relating to all blasting activities when required.
  • Instruct and promote safe work practices with subordinates by ensuring that routine safety toolbox meets are held on a regular (daily) basis.
  • Promote and adhere to the company’s internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards by consistently maintaining a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
  • Be accountable for the quality of work output from the unit/department through an ongoing monitoring and audit process.
  • Ensure all administration functions and tasks associated with the position are undertaken and completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Identify and recommend areas of improvement within the working unit (drill & blast) and recommend changes where required in terms of procedure and personnel under direct supervision.
  • Promote and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures through consistently demonstrating and encouraging safe work practices.
  • Report any incidents, including any injury or near miss to the supervisors.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements in terms of explosive and reporting.
  • Comply with established environmentally sustainable measures to not adversely impact on the natural fauna, flora, freshwater resources and marine life within the bounds of Simberi Island
  • Identify any potentially hazardous work/environmental situations and address these with the Mining Supervisor and Mining Engineer.

Scheduling accountabilities

  • Plan the daily activities and assign blast crew accordingly that is in line with the weekly plan.
  • Coordinate blasting activity with drill and blast supervisor
  • Provide daily management and supervision to ensure that all incident recalls and toolbox meetings are done prior to commencement of daily activity on the mine pits
  • Organise the duties of the blasting personnel to ensure that they are carried out safely and satisfactorily
  • Work with Orica to ensure the explosive trucks are schedule for service every 2 months.

People accountabilities & Safety Expectations

  • Ensure that subordinates have all undergone a thorough workplace induction prior to being actively involved in work routines at the drill and blast sites on the mine pits.
  • Ensure that subordinates are properly trained and are well versed in handling, conveyance and use of explosives products and other dangerous goods (DG).
  • Provide direction and act as a technical reference point and mentor for subordinates.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and company standards through training and development of personnel and promoting such by example
  • Be responsible for implementing and monitoring of performance and development review for all personnel within the work unit / direct subordinates.
  • Be accountable for the initiation of any disciplinary action or reward recognition for personnel under direct supervision within the work unit.
  • Provide coaching and training for subordinates (especially local employees) with a view to promoting their level of competence in drill and blast activity.
  • Identify training requirements of subordinates through consultation with the employees and recommend to supervisors.
  • Using established training methods and in conjunction with the Training Department train subordinates to achieve competency in the area identified and within the scope of their position
  • Participate in training provided by the business.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values.
  • A valid Shot Firers permit
  • Have a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in Blasting as Shotfirer.
  • Competent in swiftly ramping up on site activities with efficient cross-function skills and ensuring on time completion.
  • Competent in the enforcement of various quality measures with respect to drill & blast techniques.
  • Well-developed communicator and a natural leader.
  • Sound analysing and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with other staff members to achieve stated responsibilities and duties.
  • Actively participate and promote a safe working environment, participate in Departmental safety meetings and display a safety conscience attitude in accordance with the OH&S policies and procedures, and safe working practices.
  • Ability to plan work effectively and efficiently with a minimum of supervision and to set priorities.
  • Some knowledge in written and verbal skills, ability to provide reports to mining supervisor/production superintendent.
  • Punctual attendance for all rostered shifts.
  • Prepared to accept responsibilities.
