Job Purpose

To operate the side-lift equipment mounted on a 20-foot truck to safely load, unload, lift, and position containers. The role ensures precise handling, equipment care, and strict adherence to safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation

• Operate the hydraulic side-lift system to lift, lower, and transfer 20-foot containers.
• Ensure stabilizers, chains, and lifting arms are correctly positioned before lifting.
• Conduct site checks to confirm safe lifting conditions (ground stability, clearance, angles).
• Perform container placement according to customer or site requirements.
• Qualified to serve as a backup driver when needed.
• Guide prime mover drivers when reversing, parking, or positioning trailers and containers.

Safety, Maintenance & Compliance

• Maintain full compliance with lifting procedures and safety protocols.
• Monitor safe working loads, lifting angles, and equipment limits.
• Ensure all exclusion zones are set and respected during lifting operations.
• Report unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment malfunctions immediately.
• Conduct daily pre-operation inspections (hydraulics, hoses, chains, controls, remotes).
• Report faults or wear promptly to prevent breakdowns.
• Keep lifting equipment clean and properly secured during travel.

Container & Job Documentation

• Record container numbers, lift locations, and any issues encountered.
• Ensure accurate completion of lift logs or operator sheets.

Coordination

• Work closely with the truck driver during positioning and stabilizer setup.
• Communicate clearly with site personnel to coordinate safe lifting.
• Provide guidance on vehicle positioning for optimal lifting angles as well as when prime mover is manoeuvring with in container yards, terminals and client’s premisses.

Qualifications & Experience

• Certification or company training for side-lift or hydraulic lifting equipment (as required).
• Experience handling containers or similar lifting operations.
• Strong knowledge of lifting safety standards and equipment operation.
• With valid driver’s license.

Skills & Competencies

• Precision and situational awareness.
• Strong focus on safety and risk management.
• Ability to identify hazards and adjust lift plans.
• Good communication skills and teamwork with drivers and site personnel.
• Driving skills considered an added advantage.
