About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact

As Director Finance – Site Business, you will play a pivotal leadership role in overseeing site financial performance to strengthen decision-making and deliver sustainable business outcomes. You will drive operating cost discipline and capital efficiency while ensuring the site meets its financial commitments. Your leadership will directly influence profitability, operational performance, inventory optimisation, and long-term value creation.

About the Role

Reporting to Head, Finance - Africa Asia Pacific you will oversee site financial performance to strengthen decision-making, and in this role you will:

  • Drive annual business planning, cost management, variance analysis, and long-term budgeting to support profitable operations.
  • Lead the development of Life of Mine (LOM) budgets and deliver accurate monthly and quarterly forecasts in line with corporate requirements.
  • Analyse financial performance, identify key cost drivers, and provide actionable recommendations for cost reduction and capital optimisation.
  • Oversee site reporting of operating costs and capital expenditure to regional leadership, including detailed variance analysis.
  • Establish and optimise financial systems and processes to strengthen economic modelling and business decision-making.
  • Ensure strong SOX compliance, internal controls, and adherence to accounting standards.
  • Embed an Always Safe culture aligned with Newmont’s safety strategy.
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing finance team, building capability, succession strength, and an inclusive, collaborative culture.

About You

You are a commercially astute leader with a strong background in mining operations and a proven ability to influence performance outcomes at site level. You bring strategic thinking, strong governance knowledge, and the leadership capability to drive financial discipline while partnering effectively with operational stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Proven mining industry experience, preferably within a site-based environment.
  • Tertiary qualification in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Financial management experience within mining operations, including advanced proficiency in cost and capital management.
  • Experience leading diverse teams and driving performance across cross-functional environments.
  • A strong understanding of the financial metrics that underpin site performance and profitability.
  • Membership in a professional accounting or finance body is desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience leading diverse teams and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP, SOX compliance, and internal control frameworks.
  • Advanced financial modelling, budgeting, and forecasting expertise.
  • Strong ERP proficiency (e.g., SAP) and familiarity with business planning systems.
  • Ability to analyse complex datasets and communicate insights clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong commercial acumen and negotiation capability.
  • Proven ability to identify and implement process improvements and drive change.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Collaborative leadership style that fosters accountability, development, and inclusivity.

Your work environment

You will be a key member of the Site Leadership Team, partnering closely with operational leaders, regional finance teams, corporate supply chain, and external stakeholders including contractors and suppliers. This role operates at the intersection of strategy and execution, providing visibility across financial operations, and long-term planning. Safety, transparency, and continuous improvement underpin everything we do.

This is a full-time, two-year fixed-term residential role on a 5:2 roster, based in Newmont’s Lihir townsite community, a gated precinct based on the coastline cliff with magnificent ocean views.

The townsite has Company provided housing (inc. utilities), international school (up to and including Year 10) and a range of recreational facilities including gym, sports club with restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and playground areas for the kids. There is also a 9-hole golf course on the island! Healthcare services are provided at the Lihir Medical Clinic.

An onsite deli and café provide access to fresh local and imported produce including grocery items, as well as barista-made coffees and freshly baked cakes. The company offers regular shipment of groceries and care packages for townsite residents to access goods not available on the island.

The Lihir fishing and boating clubs offer the opportunity to get out and enjoy the pristine waters and beaches around the island on the weekends.
