SMAA Business Development Officer

We are currently seeking a SMAA Business Development Officer to join our team on a permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. (Locals are encouraged to apply).

Reporting to the Executive Chairman - Sustainable Community Development Programs.

The SMAA Business Development Officer is to provide high quality business development support and advice to the mining affected community and ML 136 landowner businesses on behalf of the Simberi Mining Area Association (SMAA). This includes organising the mining affected communities and businesses, building their capacities, and identifying business opportunities as to maximise their participation in business opportunities within the Tabar Island Group and beyond. This role sits with the landowner association but will be working closely with Simberi Gold Company Limited’s Business Development Officer and Contracts Specialist in facilitating local businesses and SGCL procurement process.

The opportunity

Technical accountabilities

  • Ensuring own Health & Safety as well as that of all other workers, identifying and maintaining safe work practices and completing all required safety training.
  • Assist in the development of the SMAA Business Plan as per the MOA.
  • Assist in the development and review of the SGCL Business Development Plan.
  • Developing a database to become the local contracts Register for the SMAA.
  • Identifying business opportunities for SMAA in collaboration with SGCL Business Development Officer (BDO) and contracts Team.
  • Managing issues relating to all existing Level C Contracts jointly with SGCL.
  • Facilitate the SGCL procurement process with SGCL BDO and Contracts Specialist in tendering approved work packages to SMS, Tabar island businesses, New Ireland Province businesses and other external businesses.
  • Work with SGCL procurement to review tender packages, selection criteria (based on owner’s input) and review recommendations for awards or negotiations.
  • Identifying training needs and Providing or Facilitating Training and Capacity Programs for Landowner businesses.
  • Communicate information on SGCL work packages and contract requirements including all business opportunities to the Simberi Mining Services (SMS) and the mining affected clans and landowners.
  • Performing other duties for SMAA when required.
  • Writing weekly and monthly reports to the SMAA Executive Chairman - Sustainable Community Development Programs and the SMAA Board with routine scheduled meetings with SGCL BDO and CR Manager.
  • Support landowner businesses with business plans, business profiles, proposals, etc.
  • Support landowner businesses with IPA, IRC, Nasfund, Insurance, bank account creation etc. as required by PNG Government laws.
  • Seek opportunities for potential JV for landowner businesses to participate in contracts they do not have the financing or technical skill to execute.

Essential

  • Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
  • Possess a degree in Business related discipline from recognised institutions within Papua New Guinea
  • Good managerial skills and know how to deal with business development work and should know how to analyse existing methods and implement improvements
  • Have previous business experience, training and promote a safe work ethic
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role working with local communities in a business development role
  • Self-motivated
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively manage time
  • A continuous improvement approach to all tasks
  • Developing initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Prepared to accept responsibility
