New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual to join our Training and Employee Development Department as a Specialist Trainer – High Risk.
About the role
Reporting to the Supervisor Senior -High Risk, the Specialist Trainer – High Risk is responsible for delivering, assessing and maintaining competency-based training for high -risk activities in compliance with PNG legislation, mine site standards and company systems. This role ensures employees and contractors are competent, authorized and compliant to perform high-risk tasks safely.
This position also supports operational excellence by improving employee competency, minimizing risk exposure, and promoting a strong compliance and safety culture across the organization.
In this role, you will:
Training & Assessment
- Deliver high-risk training & assessment for mine site personnel including but not limited to: working at Heights, Confined Space Entry, Isolation & Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Mobile plant & Equipment’s (Where authorized), Lifting, Rigging & Crane Safety hot works
- Conduct competency assessments, refresher training and re-assessment as required
- Develop and update training materials, lesson plans and assessments tools aligned with site standards
- Ensure training meets PNG Mining Act, Work Health & Safety Act and company requirements
Compliance & Documentation
- Promote adherence to internal controls, risk framework, and regulatory standards
- Support risk mitigation initiatives through targeted training and awareness programs
- Monitor high risk activities and identify operational risks or procedural gaps
- Participate in audits, investigations, and corrective action planning where required
- Ensure employees understand escalation procedures and incident management protocols
- Maintain accurate training records and authorization’s
- Ensure all high-risk training is documented and auditable
- Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness and comply with the NPL Occupational Health & Safety Policy and all health & Safety Policy
Performance Management & Quality Assurance
- Evaluate trainee performance through assessments, observations, and competency reviews.
- Track training effectiveness and operational outcomes related to high-risk processes.
- Analyze trends, audit findings, and incidents to identify training needs and improvement opportunities.
- Provide coaching and ongoing support to employees and team leaders.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Liaise with supervisors, safety teams and contractors to identify training needs
- Act as a subject expert (SME) for high -risk process training and compliance matters
- Support implementation of new policies, procedures and regulatory updates
- Assist management in driving a culture of accountability and operational discipline
About You
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (or equivalent)
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in high-risk training in mining or heavy industry
- Industry -recognized certification in high-risk activities (e.g. WAH, Confined Space)
- Strong understanding of PNG mining and WHS legislation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities with strong facilitation, assessment and coaching skills
- Ability to manage sensitive or high-risk operational topics
- Audit and compliance monitoring capability
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Learning Management Systems (LMS)
Mobilization Requirement
This is a PNG National position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Candidates must be PNG Citizens and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.
