About the role

The Superintendent H&S – Underground is responsible for providing visible safety leadership and strategic H&S support to K92's Underground Operations.

The role partners with Underground operational leaders to identify, assess and control critical risks, strengthen operational discipline, improve workforce capability and ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.

The Superintendent H&S – Underground will spend significant time in the field engaging with leaders and work crews, verifying critical controls, coaching supervisors and supporting a proactive safety culture focused on learning, risk ownership and continuous improvement.

The role is accountable for ensuring that underground health and safety systems are effectively implemented and that underground operations are conducted in a manner that protects people, the environment, equipment and the business.

Key / Major Accountabilities

Key accountabilities of this position include.

  • Provide visible and credible safety leadership across Underground Operations.
  • Develop strong working relationships with operational leaders, supervisors and work crews.
  • Promote a culture of personal accountability, risk ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Coach frontline leaders in effective field leadership, risk management and safety engagement practices.
  • Build leadership capability through coaching, mentoring and field-based learning.
  • Support the development of a positive reporting and learning culture.
  • Support the implementation and verification of fatal risk management and critical control programs.
  • Maintain oversight of underground risk registers, TARPs and critical risk management plans.
  • Facilitate risk assessments for high risk and non-routine work activities.
  • Monitor emerging risks and ensure effective controls are implemented and maintained.
  • Maintain a strong visible field presence underground.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, leadership interactions and task observations.
  • Verify compliance with site standards, procedures and critical control requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational discipline and workforce behaviours.
  • Lead investigations into significant and high potential incidents.
  • Verify corrective actions are practical, effective and sustainable.
  • Share lessons learned across the organisation.
  • Support the implementation and continual improvement of H&S management systems including SkyTrust.
  • Support the development, implementation and verification of H&S standards, critical control standards and safe work practices.
  • Participate in internal assurance activities and management system audits.
  • Monitor performance indicators and identify trends requiring intervention.
  • Support the development of underground safety leadership capability.
  • Assist with development and delivery of H&S training programs.
  • Mentor supervisors, safety representatives and emerging safety professionals.
  • Support underground emergency response preparedness.
  • Participate in emergency planning, exercises and reviews.
  • Assist with development of underground emergency procedures and response capability.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable PNG legislation, MRA requirements and company standards.
  • Support regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Prepare reports and documentation required by regulators and company management.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have a tertiary qualification in relevant field with a minimum of 4 years’ experience as Safety Superintendent in Mining, Oil or Gas Industry. In addition to this, you will have most or all of the following.

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Mining Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior H&S role within mining, including experience supporting underground operations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading incident investigations.
  • Training in ICAM or equivalent investigation methodology.
  • Training in auditing and assurance processes.
  • Underground metalliferous mining experience.
  • Current PNG Driver's Licence.
  • Emergency response experience.
  • Training and assessment qualifications.
  • Exposure to critical control management systems.
