About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Purpose

The Power & Utilities Department at our Lihir operation has an exciting opportunity for a Superintendent – Power & Utilities Mechanical Maintenance. Reporting to the Manager – Power & Utilities, you will lead the mechanical maintenance, planning & reliability, monitoring diagnosis & improving mechanical maintenance work & systems across the various Power & Utilities assets on Lihir Island.

Essential Duties

  • Lead P&U mechanical maintenance, planning & reliability across all P&U assets, ensuring safety is a top priority & assets are maintained & available to support the site power & steam demands
  • Develop maintenance procedures and guidelines for effective maintenance of P&U assets in line with site maintenance business practices & systems
  • Adhere to compliance with safety and environmental regulations
  • Monitor, Diagnose & Improve teams’ performance & implement improvement strategies
  • Run budget and resources for power and utilities mechanical maintenance & reliability
  • Accountable for mechanical reliability across power & utilities assets
  • Conduct regular inspections and safety audits of power and utilities assets, work & systems
  • Solve maintenance issues and streamline power and utilities processes
  • Coach and guide the team on safe work practices & procedures
  • Responsible for identifying relevant risks, implementing mitigation measures, and continuous risk monitoring
  • Manage Wartsila Maintenance Contract
  • Works in established systems and processes
  • Compares data collected from processes with a known model or system
  • Extrapolates patterns to make predictions
  • Improves work methods using significant data and patterns

Training & Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, diploma, Mechanical Tradesman or a related field
  • Several years of experience in power generation systems, mechanical maintenance, and high-pressure steam boilers, demonstrating progression through roles of increasing responsibility
  • Advanced understanding of power generation & utilities such as reciprocating engine generation, high-pressure steam boilers, potable water plants, demineralization plants, incinerators, safety compliance, and stakeholder collaboration
  • Advanced knowledge and practical application in maintenance scheduling, performance monitoring, budgeting, risk mitigation and compliance with safety and environmental policies
  • Competent knowledge of health, safety, environment and sustainability regulations and practices
  • Competent understanding of project cost management and financial principles
  • Advanced understanding and application of maintenance systems, SAP, scheduling software programs and tools Competent knowledge of key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics for performance
  • Competent knowledge of health, safety, environment and sustainability regulations and practices
  • Competent ability to interact, influence and resolve conflict with various stakeholders

Working Conditions

Roster options include 21:21 or 5:2 on a FIFO or Residential basis.
