Superintendent – Metallurgy

The New Porgera Limited now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual to join our Metallurgy-Processing Department as a Superintendent – Metallurgy.

Superintendent – Metallurgy (239661)

We seek to appoint an experienced Metallurgy Superintendent to join the Porgera team to lead metallurgical accounting and drive strategies that optimise plant performance and maximise gold recovery. This role has a strong development focus, with responsibility for knowledge sharing and future-proofing the metallurgy team in line with global best practice. It presents a unique opportunity to contribute to plant optimisation and improvements within an operation that values safety, visible leadership and operational excellence:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leadership of the Metallurgy team to ensure safe, cost efficient, operation (daily to life-of-mine) is achieved through control and optimisation of the processing plant which includes Crushing, Grinding, Flotation, Pressure Oxidation autoclaves, Oxygen Plants, Lime Kilns, Tailings Detoxification, gold leach / CIP and gold room.
  • Accountable for high quality reporting of production, improvement and metallurgical reporting. Including Metallurgical Accounting improvements.
  • Strengthen and enhance Metallurgy team performance and capability through focused training/coaching and feedback, employee development and talent identification / retention.
  • Hands on training, coaching and improvement of Metallurgical team members to ensure they understand the requirements of their roles, have strong analytical and reporting capabilities and they focus on transferring knowledge to operators to run the plant.
  • Establish and implement well-defined accountabilities for Metallurgy team interaction, reporting and support to process operations, assay laboratory, maintenance, mining, finance & product security teams.
  • Develop and manage systems to ensure training/employee development, statutory compliance and change management systems.
  • Manage and provide leadership of Project Management and Change Management processes to deliver capital and business improvement / continuous improvement projects to achieve business results, cost, quality, quantity and schedule.
  • Develop and manage processes for metallurgical assessment of future ore sources, improvements to process plant efficiency and reduction to operational risks.
  • Develop and manage systems to collect and analyse information to assess performance statistics, statutory requirements, systems efficiencies and business improvement initiatives, and provide timely recommendations for implementation in the operation.

To be suitable for this role, you will possess the following:

  • Tertiary Qualifications in Metallurgical or Chemical Engineering including at least 15 years’ experience in Minerals processing operations , including several years in Superintendent or senior metallurgist roles in the gold and / or base metals industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, coach and mentor team members for their professional development and strengthen overall team capabilities in developing countries.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team safely and improve team safety awareness.
  • Demonstrated experience in management of metallurgical databases and accounting systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, change management and business improvement systems to deliver results and act as a change agent
  • Experience in managing costs and budgeting
  • First aid certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Certificate IV Training and Assessment (preferable).
  • Current Drivers Licence.
  • Maintain a high level of health and safety awareness and comply with the NPL Occupational Health & Safety Policy and all health and safety rules and procedures

Mobilisation Requirement

This is a PNG Citizen position, a site-based role on a FIFO arrangement with a rotation of 21 days on and 14 days off. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol screening (to be arranged only for successful candidates after the interview stage), and provide an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate (acquired within the last 6 months). Candidates must be PNG citizens and available to start immediately. Females are encouraged to apply.
