Our Lihir Operation is located on Aniolam Island in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Province. Lihir is one of the world’s largest producing gold operations and is situated within a geothermally active, extinct volcanic crater near the town of Londolovit. As a major open-pit gold operation, Lihir plays an important role in Newmont’s global portfolio and contributes significant economic and social value to Papua New Guinea and local communities.
Your role
As the Superintendent, Power & Utilities Operations, you will lead Power and Utilities operations across the Lihir operation, with a strong focus on safe, reliable and efficient power generation.
This role is responsible for monitoring, diagnosing and improving power generation operations on Lihir Island in line with site standards and country regulations. You will oversee power and utilities assets, guide operational performance, manage risk, develop teams and support continuous improvement across a 24-hour operating environment.
This is a key residential leadership role for an experienced power station or power generation professional who has led teams, managed operational performance and understands the systems, networks and controls required to run safe and reliable power generation operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee Power and Utilities operations across department assets, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient performance.
- Develop operational procedures and guidelines to support effective operation of power assets.
- Monitor, diagnose and improve team performance, implementing improvement strategies where required.
- Monitor asset and team performance metrics, including KPIs, reliability measures and operational trends.
- Complete operational and statutory reporting in line with site and regulatory requirements.
- Develop budgets, resource plans and operational requirements for power and utilities activities.
- Conduct regular inspections and safety audits across power and utilities systems.
- Identify and resolve operational issues, streamlining power and utilities processes where possible.
- Coach and guide power and utilities team members on procedures, safety expectations and operational requirements.
- Identify operational risks, implement mitigation measures and continuously monitor risk controls.
Your Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated experience in power station, power generation or power utilities operations.
- Strong understanding of power plant systems, power generation operations and associated networks.
- Previous leadership experience, ideally in a superintendent, supervisor, team leader or power station management role.
- Experience leading, coaching and developing operational teams in a 24-hour operating environment.
- Ability to monitor, diagnose and improve operational and team performance.
- Strong understanding of safety compliance, risk management and environmental requirements within power or utilities operations.
- Experience with operational scheduling, performance monitoring, reporting and continuous improvement.
- Budgeting, resource planning and cost management experience.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to interact, influence and resolve issues across operations, maintenance, technical teams, contractors and service providers.
- Ability and willingness to work residentially on Lihir Island on a 5 days on / 2 days off roster.
Desirable experience includes a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, a trade certificate, power station operator certification, or equivalent practical power generation leadership experience. Mining experience is not essential; candidates from power generation, utilities, PNG Power, industrial operations, oil and gas, manufacturing or other relevant power plant environments are encouraged to apply where they bring strong power station operations and people leadership experience.
Work Environment & Benefits
This is a full-time residential PNG national role based at Lihir Gold Limited in Papua New Guinea, working on a 5 days on / 2 days off roster. You will support Operations and Process Operations, leading a Power and Utilities team that supports critical site infrastructure and 24-hour operational requirements.
You will work closely with cross-functional superintendents, supervisors, advisors, specialists, project teams, health and safety, environmental teams, technicians, engineers, regulatory bodies, government stakeholders, suppliers and service providers.
This role offers the opportunity to step into a key site leadership position where your power generation experience will directly support safe, reliable and sustainable operations at one of Newmont’s major PNG operations.
