About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact

As a Supervisor, Mechanical, you will play a critical role in managing mechanical operations to ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance across our operations. You will lead and support a team to deliver high-quality maintenance outcomes, optimise performance, and drive continuous improvement in line with Newmont’s operational and safety standards.

As part of our team, you will

  • Lead and support mechanical operations, ensuring equipment performance and operational efficiency.
  • Champion safety by implementing and maintaining compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
  • Execute and oversee routine maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Analyse and report on operational data to support informed decision-making.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with cross-functional teams, contractors, and stakeholders to achieve business outcomes.
  • Allocate work, monitor team performance, and foster a positive and productive team culture.
  • Identify risks, implement mitigation strategies, and promote continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support onboarding and development of team members through coaching and guidance.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

  • A Mechanical Trade Qualification is essential, with a tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Maritime Studies, or a related discipline highly regarded.
  • Practical trade-based experience, with welding and boilermaking experience highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical or structural operations within mining, heavy industry, or a similar environment, with strong exposure to heavy diesel and heavy machinery (e.g. Cummins, Caterpillar, Wärtsilä equipment).
  • Proven expertise in maintenance execution, equipment reliability, and process optimisation, supported by a strong understanding of safety protocols, risk management, and compliance requirements.
  • Solid experience in project management, technical support, and operational delivery, including planning, scheduling, tracking, monitoring, and reporting on maintenance and project activities.
  • Strong working knowledge of health, safety, environmental, and sustainability regulations, with the ability to embed these into day-to-day operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, with experience leading, coaching, and developing teams to achieve safe and productive outcomes, while fostering a positive and high-performing team culture.
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyse complex operational issues and implement practical, effective solutions.
  • Advanced stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including the ability to influence, collaborate, and resolve conflicts across multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
  • Proven ability to plan, coordinate, and manage resources effectively, with a strong understanding of project cost management principles, KPIs, and performance metrics.
  • Experience working with relevant systems and tools, with SAP experience highly regarded.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships, foster teamwork, and communicate effectively across all levels of the organisation.
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant legal and compliance requirements within a mining or heavy industry environment.
  • A current PNG Class 6 driver’s licence is desirable.

Your work environment

This role is offered on a 28:14-day shift, fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea.

You will work closely with internal stakeholders including Superintendents, Engineers, Advisors, and Technicians, as well as external contractors and service providers. The position operates in a dynamic and safety-focused environment that requires adaptability, collaboration, and a strong commitment to operational excellence.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
