About the Role
The University seeks a qualified and dedicated Systems Support Officer to join the ICT Services team.
This position plays a key role in maintaining the reliability, performance, and security of the University’s ICT systems and infrastructure. The successful candidate will provide technical support to staff and students, assist with server management, and contribute to the efficient operation of ICT resources across all campuses.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support
- Provide timely and effective help desk support for hardware, software, and network issues.
- Install, configure, and maintain computer systems, printers, scanners, and related equipment.
- Respond promptly to service requests via phone, email, WhatsApp, or in-person.
- Create and manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
- Deliver end-user guidance and basic ICT training.
- Maintain accurate records of support requests and resolutions.
Server Maintenance
- Monitor server health, performance, and resource utilization using appropriate tools.
- Ensure uptime and availability of core services hosted on Dell VxRail and PowerEdge servers.
- Apply updates, patches, and firmware upgrades; conduct tests before deployment.
- Configure and manage automated backup systems; perform backup integrity and restoration tests.
- Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions in server environments and audit login activities.
- Configure and maintain firewall rules and monitor intrusion detection systems.
- Maintain the Mitel 470 PBX system, including user extensions and SIP trunking.
- Troubleshoot and manage virtualized environments and storage clusters.
- Maintain documentation on configurations, maintenance schedules, and incident logs.
Physical and Manual Tasks
- Perform equipment setup, lifting (up to 20kg), bending, or crawling as required for ICT installations.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- CompTIA A+ certification is required.
- Additional certifications such as CCNA, MCP, Linux+, or PowerShell experience are desirable.
- NICTA Cabling License is an advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a technical support or network technician role.
- Proven experience managing network infrastructure and cybersecurity systems.
- Experience with Dell VxRail and PowerEdge environments.
- Working knowledge of Mitel 470 PBX systems.
- Ability to perform effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Willingness to travel between campuses and work outside normal business hours when required.
Knowledge and Skills
- Proficiency in Windows, Linux, and macOS environments.
- Strong understanding of networking protocols, system administration, and database fundamentals.
- Familiarity with Active Directory, firewall configuration, and network security practices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- High level of adaptability, integrity, and attention to detail.
- Commitment to professional development and continuous learning.
Salary Range:
K30,495 – K37,276 per annum
