About the role
The Engineer for the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) will be responsible for providing technical support and expertise in the design, construction, and operational monitoring of the tailings storage facility (TSF). The position is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient management of tailings and waste material in compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Key / Major Accountabilities
Key accountabilities of this position include.
- Assist in the design and planning of TSF expansion and improvement projects.
- Provide engineering input for structural stability, water management, and geotechnical aspects of TSF development.
- Support the preparation of technical reports, feasibility studies, and risk assessments related to the TSF.
- Conduct regular inspections of the TSF to assess the condition of infrastructure, including dams, embankments, pipelines, and water management systems.
- Monitor and report on the performance of TSF operations, identifying potential risks, issues, and mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with the environmental and operational teams to implement best practices for waste management.
- Ensure all TSF activities comply with local regulations, international standards, and company policies.
- Prepare and maintain TSF documentation, including operational procedures, monitoring reports, and audit trails for compliance audits.
- Assist in the preparation of submissions for permits, environmental impact assessments, and other regulatory approvals.
- Support the implementation of the TSF's safety and emergency response plans.
- Identify hazards and recommend improvements to reduce risk and enhance safety at the facility.
- Participate in risk assessments, incident investigations, and continuous improvement processes related to the TSF.
- Support project planning, budgeting, and scheduling for TSF-related projects.
- Work closely with contractors, consultants, and internal teams to ensure effective project execution.
- Monitor progress against timelines and ensure resources are appropriately allocated.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including government authorities, environmental agencies, local communities, and contractors regarding TSF operations and developments.
- Provide technical support for stakeholder consultations, including environmental and community considerations.
- Assist in training field personnel and contractors on best practices related to TSF operations and safety procedures.
- Keep updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies in tailings management.
About You
To be considered for this role, you must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong character who is prepared to make hard decisions and deliver results. In addition to this, you will have the following.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant engineering experience in tailings management, mine waste, or related fields.
- Experience in the design, construction, and operation of tailings storage facilities is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, hydrology, and water management in mining operations.
- Familiarity with international standards, such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and regulatory frameworks in Papua New Guinea.
- Proficient in the use of engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, GeoStudio, etc.).
- Strong understanding of environmental and safety requirements associated with TSF operations.
- Experience with risk assessment techniques and methodologies in mining and infrastructure projects.
