POSITION TITLE: Teacher – Junior Primary School

LOCATION: Balimo

DURATION: Fixed Term

ABOUT KTF:

KTF is an Australian international aid and development organisation working in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

We work with people and communities to improve the lives and futures of Papua New Guineans. We do this by: assisting remote and rural communities with access to elementary and primary education; improving access to quality and accessible healthcare; improving equality and access to sustainable income-generation opportunities, especially for women; and by fostering the next generation of leaders.

ABOUT

The Balimo College educational campus was established by SDP in 2019 to build the education and health standards and pathways for the Western Province. Through the college, SDP now proudly delivers tertiary qualifications in Junior Primary Teaching and in Nursing under the Balimo College program; secondary school certification and GPA upgrades through Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE); and e-Learning programs in schools around the area. SDP now embarks on an exciting new chapter expanding the campus and operating the Hon. Roy Biyama Balimo Academy (RBBA).

HON. ROY BIYAMA BALIMO ACADEMY (RBBA)

The school commenced in 2024 and is growing rapidly, aiming to cater for 1000 students in Grades K–12 by 2028. The Academy operates in an environment conducive to quality teaching and learning that is inclusive and responsive to additional needs and focused on removing educational barriers for local students to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are recruiting for a passionate and dedicated Junior Primary Teacher to join our growing team in 2026. We are seeking an educator who can create engaging, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environments for students in the early years (Prep–Grade 3).

The successful candidate will play a critical role in building strong foundational literacy, numeracy, and social skills, while fostering a love of learning in young students. The teacher will be part of a collaborative K–12 team and contribute to a positive and supportive school culture.

We are particularly seeking a teacher who:

  • Has a strong understanding of early childhood development
  • Can deliver engaging, play-based and structured learning programs
  • Is committed to foundational skill development in literacy and numeracy
  • Can support students with diverse learning needs

Well-qualified applicants with diverse experience and a strong commitment to early years education will be highly regarded.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaching:
    Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans aligned with the PNG Standards-Based Curriculum (SBC); use a variety of age-appropriate teaching strategies; support early literacy and numeracy development.
  • Student Support and Classroom Management:
    Create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment; implement effective behaviour management strategies suited to young learners; support students’ social and emotional development.
  • Student Assessment:
    Monitor and assess student progress; maintain records; provide constructive feedback; identify and support students requiring additional assistance.
  • Collaboration:
    Work collaboratively with colleagues across primary and secondary; participate in planning sessions, meetings, and professional development.
  • Parent and Guardian Communication:
    Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians; support parent engagement in student learning; attend school events and meetings.
  • Operations:
    Maintain accurate student records including attendance and assessment data; report to school leadership as required.
  • Professional Development:
    Engage in continuous learning to improve teaching practice, particularly in early childhood education.
  • Other:
    Undertake additional duties as required; adhere to all KTF policies and safeguarding standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Education (Primary or Early Childhood) – ESSENTIAL
  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience – ESSENTIAL
  • Full teacher registration (PNG Teaching Service Commission or equivalent) – ESSENTIAL

  • Ability to build positive relationships with young learners
  • High-level communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners
  • Competence in basic ICT for teaching and administration
  • Creativity, patience, and enthusiasm for teaching young children
  • Willingness to contribute to a whole-school culture and community

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must have the right to work in PNG
  • Willingness to relocate to Balimo during the academic year
  • Compliance with KTF safeguarding standards (police check, child protection, etc.)
