About Newmont
At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermally active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open pit mine that produces refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.
We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.
Purpose
Our Lihir operation is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to lead our Trade and Safety Training team within the Human Resources – Technical Training department.
As the Team Lead, you will report to the Lead Technical Training and play a pivotal role in mentoring and supporting our Trade and Safety Trainers. These trainers are responsible for delivering high-quality programs across key apprenticeship and safety training areas, including Maintenance Fitting and Machining (MFM), Metal Fabrication and Welding (MFW), Heavy Equipment Fitting (HEF), and Electrical Apprenticeships.
This is a critical leadership role that will shape the development of our workforce and ensure excellence in technical training delivery.
About The Role:
This position is responsible for developing and delivering training programs that adhere to Newmont and NATTB standards. The key focus areas include Mechanical Fitting and Machining (MFM), Mechanical Fitting and Welding (MFW), Heavy Equipment Fundamentals (HEF), and Safety Training.
Additionally, this role involves managing the recruitment and selection process for apprentices, trade trainers, and safety trainers to create a high-performing training team. A crucial responsibility is to promote collaboration among trainers to ensure a safe and productive learning environment at the LTTC Workshop. Furthermore, the position includes overseeing hands-on repair work, responding to service tickets, and coordinating with vendors to support workshop operations.
About You:
You are an inspiring training professional with a robust foundation in technical training, learning systems, and employee development. Holding a bachelor’s degree and a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (or equivalent), you embody proven experience in designing and delivering impactful training programs that not only meet industry and regulatory standards but also empower others. Your expertise spans training compliance, curriculum development, learning management systems, and adult learning principles, allowing you to create transformative educational experiences.
Confident in developing Training Matrices and facilitating Train-the-Trainer sessions, you skilfully adapt global and regional policies to resonate within local contexts. Your experience in the mining or heavy industry sectors is highly regarded, showcasing your ability to engage effectively with key PNG regulatory bodies such as the MRA, NATTB, and DHERST.
As a leader, you cultivate inclusivity and collaboration, dedicated to building high-performing teams where individuals feel safe to share ideas and grow. Balancing operational goals with people development, you communicate clearly and influence effectively, engaging stakeholders and making decisions rooted in data. With a strategic mindset and strong analytical ability, you tackle complex problems with creativity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement.
