About the Role
PNGUNRE invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated candidates for appointment as Technical Officer (Maps & Surveying) within the Department of Forestry, School of Natural Resources.
The position is based at the Vudal Campus, East New Britain Province, and provides specialised technical support in cartography, surveying, and geospatial data management to underpin teaching, research, and community engagement activities. The role supports sustainable forest management, land-use planning, and applied forestry training through accurate spatial data and field-based technical services.
The appointee will report directly to the Head of Department, Forestry.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys and prepare accurate maps to support forestry teaching, research, and extension activities.
- Generate, analyse, and maintain geospatial data using GIS and remote sensing technologies.
- Manage spatial data repositories, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and accessibility for academic and research use.
- Provide technical support to academic staff and students in mapping, surveying, and GIS-related coursework and field training.
- Operate, maintain, and manage surveying instruments, GPS units, drones, and related equipment in accordance with safety standards.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, maps, and visual materials for research, consultancy, and community outreach programs.
- Support training workshops and capacity-building activities for staff, students, and community stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety requirements during field and laboratory operations.
- Collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and local communities on forestry mapping and land-use initiatives.
- Perform other duties as reasonably directed by the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in surveying, Geomatics, Cartography, GIS, Forestry, or a closely related field from a recognised institution.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ practical experience in surveying, mapping, or GIS-related roles.
- Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS), GPS systems, AutoCAD, and basic remote sensing tools.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake fieldwork in diverse and challenging environments.
- Strong technical reporting, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with academic staff, students, and external stakeholders.
- High attention to detail, problem-solving capability, and adaptability to evolving technologies.
- Commitment to sustainability, responsible resource management, and community engagement.
Salary Range
Technical Officer
K35,983.00 – K43,922.00
(plus applicable allowances and benefits)
