About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact

You will provide critical auto-electrical support for heavy vehicles and associated equipment across our mining operations. Your expertise will ensure safe operation, effective fault diagnosis, and preventative maintenance, maximising equipment availability and uptime to support uninterrupted production. Your contribution directly impacts operational efficiency, safety, and overall mine performance.

As part of our team, you will

  • Comply with all safety protocols and actively participate in safety discussions.
  • Conduct routine inspections of light vehicles and equipment, documenting defects and follow-up actions.
  • Diagnose and repair minor electrical faults on-site to minimise downtime.
  • Complete accurate maintenance records for inspections, repairs, and adjustments.
  • Maintain electrical safety standards across work areas, ensuring regulatory and policy compliance.
  • Support spare parts inventory management, confirming availability and updating records.
  • Monitor vehicle conditions, identifying wear or performance issues, and report to the Supervisor – Maintenance.
  • Stop unsafe work and report hazards or incidents in line with site procedures.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including Maintenance, Operations, HSE, and Supply Chain.
  • Engage with external suppliers and service providers as required.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

  • Experience working on heavy machinery within a mining environment.
  • Relevant Electrical Trade Qualification recognised by the National Trade Testing Body.
  • Valid PNG Class 3 and 7 Driver’s Licence.
  • Experience within a dealership setting and with oil or pump systems is highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of auto-electrical systems for light vehicles and heavy mobile mining equipment, including CAT 785 haul trucks.
  • Proven experience using CAT SIS and a solid working knowledge of SAP maintenance management systems.
  • Practical experience using diagnostic tools, equipment, and systems to perform maintenance and repairs.
  • Strong understanding of Caterpillar systems, with particular expertise in electrical systems and fault diagnostics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of auto-electrical systems for light vehicles and mobile mining equipment.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and troubleshoot complex electrical systems effectively.
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety standards, maintenance procedures, and regulatory requirements relevant to mining.
  • Willingness to work outside the workshop, including field-based tasks and breakdown support.

Your work environment

This role is offered on a 28:14 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

You will work in a dynamic and hands-on mining environment, supporting maintenance activities across light and heavy vehicles. The role involves a mix of workshop-based tasks, on-site inspections, and field diagnostics, with a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and operational efficiency.
