About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Your Impact
As a Mine Technician, you’ll play a key role in safely operating haul trucks and mobile plant to meet daily, weekly, and long‑term production targets. Your work ensures consistent, high‑quality ore supply to the crushers—directly contributing to Lihir’s monthly and annual gold output. You’ll be part of a team that values discipline, teamwork, and a strong commitment to safety, working in accordance with Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environmental policies and the PNG Mine Safety Act.
As part of our team, you will:
- Operate haul trucks and mobile mining equipment in the open‑cut mine to achieve production targets.
- Deliver consistent ore feed to support crusher performance and gold production goals.
- Maintain strict compliance with all safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
- Conduct pre‑start inspections and ensure equipment is operated safely and efficiently.
- Work collaboratively with supervisors and team members to maintain a productive, safe work environment.
- Identify and report hazards, minimise waste, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Prerequisites for your success in this role
- Prior experience in heavy industry, ideally within mining.
- Ability to operate heavy earthmoving equipment is desirable
- Certification on CAT 777/785 haul trucks and ancillary fleet.
- Experience with modular mining systems.
- Effectively manages own time to complete tasks in line with job expectations and requirements adjusting plans to cater for unforeseen events / disruptions. •
- Recognises problems and proactively works towards resolution under the guidance of immediate Supervisor.
- Recognises opportunities to minimise waste and addresses it according to the OHSE and operational standards and practices
- Work in accordance with PNG Mine Safety Act, Newmont Safety System, Safety Policies and Procedures and Newmont Environment policies and all departmental operating procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally
Your work environment
This role is offered on a 28:14 day/ night Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, PNG.
Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
