About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Purpose
To operate plant and equipment in various areas of the Oxygen Plant safely as directed by immediate supervisor.
Essential Duties
Safety & Sustainability
- Ensure personal and team compliance with all company HSE requirements & policies including Fitness for Work.
- Complete any HSE tasks only if the hazards and any potential consequences are understood and any corrections are firstly agreed by the relevant Supervisor.
Growth Strategy / Governance
- Actively seeks cost reduction opportunities and identifies & reports any cost wastage within designated area.
Operational Excellence
- Carrie out work as directed by immediate Supervisor in the Oxygen Plant areas and ensures that all safe working procedures are observed.
- Ensure all works for the shift (inspections, identifying defects, system verifications, routine schedules, SOP’s etc.) are completed within all safety, environmental and company compliance processes and guidelines.
- Operate oxygen process plant equipment as directed completing Daily Plans & Work Inspections advising immediate Supervisor of the need for Work Notifications for any defects or hazards found in the area.
- As directed, undertakes regular inspections of all plant areas of responsibility.
- Participates in skills training, shift handover communications, toolbox meetings and any other activities as required by the Supervisor.

Training and Experience
Knowledge:
- Work well with others, listens actively, seeks inputs and asks clarification questions to check understanding staying focused and composed in a variety of work situations.
- Effectively manages own time to complete tasks in line with job expectations and requirements adjusting plans to cater for unforeseen events / disruptions.
- Recognise problems and proactively works towards resolution under the guidance of immediate Supervisor.
- Recognizes opportunities to minimize waste and addresses it according to the HSE and operational standards and practices.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years relevant work experience as an operator in a cryogenic or oil refinery plant essential, either through experience in a similar operation or through progression as Trainee Operator.
- Sound awareness of equipment and maintenance issues.
- Good verbal & written communication skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously from time to time.
- High attention to detail with good time management skills.
- Strong active listening & interpersonal skills.
Skills and Abilities:
- Work in accordance with PNG Mine Safety Act, Newmont Safety System, Safety Policies and Procedures and Newmont Environment policies and all departmental operating procedures.
- Knowledgeable in the operation of compressor, turbine and cooling water system.
- Ability to operate SCADA and DCS control system.
Working Condition
- The position is in Lihir Island.
- This is a FIFO role on a 28/14 roster and the incumbent can be expected to operate shifts anywhere from very early morning through to finishing after last light operations are completed.
