About Newmont

At Newmont, we’re not just a world-leading gold and metals producer – we’re a team united by our commitment to shaping a more inclusive, sustainable, and responsible mining industry. Joining us means becoming part of a global, diverse workforce where everyone is valued, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Our people are the heart of our success, bringing exceptional skill, integrity, and dedication to everything we do as an organization and we’re dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

Your Impact

As a Technician, Geothermal Drilling, you will play a vital role in supporting safe, efficient, and high‑quality technical drilling activities within Lihir’s unique high‑temperature geothermal environment.

Your work will directly contribute to the integrity of drilling programs, the reliability of geotechnical and geothermal monitoring systems, and the ongoing safety of mine operations. By applying strong field capability, sound judgement, and a commitment to safety, you will help ensure that technical drilling activities are executed to the highest operational standards.

As part of our team, you will

  • Ensure full compliance with all HSE requirements, policies, and procedures, including Fitness for Work standards.
  • Carry out HSE‑related tasks only when hazards, risks, and controls are clearly understood and agreed with your supervisor.
  • Identify, manage, and escalate geothermal hazards such as high temperatures, steam, gas, and unstable ground conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with drilling contractors, technical teams, and operational personnel to support safe and productive outcomes.
  • Promote a positive safety culture through communication, coaching, and active field engagement.
  • Lead the installation, monitoring, and data collection of geotechnical and geothermal instrumentation across the open pit.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of all mine technical drilling programs.
  • Support geohazard awareness and training initiatives for operational and technical teams.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections on geothermal wells and monitoring equipment, including steam relief wells.
  • Provide technical field support to diamond drilling activities to ensure drilling integrity, data quality, and compliance with geothermal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs and eliminate waste while maintaining safety and operational standards.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • Class 6 PNG Driver’s Licence.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a mining or technical services role.
  • Ability to use software applications and data systems relevant to drilling and geothermal monitoring.
  • Competency in Microsoft Word and Excel for data entry, reporting, and basic analysis.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in multicultural teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, attention to detail, and sound problem‑solving capability.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with Supervisor direction.

Desirable

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar technical qualification.
  • Familiarity with geothermal instrumentation, drilling equipment, and monitoring systems.
  • Experience working within the PNG Mine Safety Act and Newcrest/Newmont Safety Management Systems.

Your work environment

This position is based at the Lihir Gold Operation and operates on a 20:20 FIFO roster (days only).

You will enjoy the opportunity to work with a diverse range of people while benefiting from a roster that supports strong work–life balance. Employees are accommodated in a secure and comfortable camp, featuring air‑conditioned, en‑suited rooms equipped with a mini‑fridge, TV, and Wi‑Fi. Healthy and varied meal options are provided at the site mess, and the wet mess offers a relaxed social space to unwind with a game of pool or darts after shift.
