About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Your Impact
As a Technician Mechanical Fitter – Oxygen Plant, you will play a key role in maintaining three oxygen plants to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. You’ll apply your mechanical fitting skills to fabricate components, interpret technical drawings, troubleshoot issues, and support continuous improvement across the oxygen plant area. Safety is central to this role—you’ll follow all HSE requirements, understand hazards before starting work, and stop any unsafe activity. Working within a diverse team, you’ll contribute to production performance, uphold maintenance standards, and actively identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve work quality.
As Part of Our Team, You Will
- Ensure full compliance with company HSE policies, including Fitness for Work.
- Strong understanding of hazard identification tools
- Have experience working in Oxygen plants
- Have experience with following work orders and basic work management skills
- Work constructively within a diverse team and contribute positively to team outcomes.
- Safely operate and maintain hand and power tools.
- Demonstrate strong team behaviours—asking questions, raising issues, contributing ideas, seeking clarity, requesting feedback, and stopping unsafe work.
Prerequisites for Your Success in This Role

- Mechanical trade qualification certified to NATTB
- Ability to follow procedural steps and complete practical, hands‑on tasks.
- Practical judgment to solve problems or seek assistance when needed.
- Willingness to learn and improve work methods through experience and observation.
- Competence in mechanical fitting, fabrication, and interpreting technical drawings.
- Ability to build positive working relationships across different disciplines.
- Determination, persistence, and commitment to delivering productive, high‑quality work.

Your Work Environment
This role is offered on a 21:21 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, PNG.
Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
