About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

Your Impact

In this opportunity, we are looking for a young local Lihirian, who is keen, determined and is passionate to build career in Health & Safety. You will be introduced to the foundations of a safe and healthy workplace by learning directly from experienced Health & Safety Advisors and supporting frontline teams to identify, manage, and eliminate safety risks helping protect people from fatalities, injuries, illness and work-related harm.

As part of our team, you will

  • Participate in field inspections and safety audits to identify hazards and support compliance with safety standards and regulations.
  • Support the delivery of hands‑on safety coaching and training for site personnel, including pre‑task hazard assessments, general risk assessments, event reporting, and 5‑Why investigations.
  • Observe and reinforce site‑specific safety procedures, ensuring teams understand and follow established protocols.
  • Contribute to key safety programs such as fatal risk management, incident management, injury reduction, and health and wellbeing initiatives by applying field observations and feedback.
  • Assist in the execution of site‑based Health & Safety plans.
  • Support the Health & Safety Representative (HSR) program and promote a culture of speaking up and stopping unsafe work.
  • Actively contribute as a team member by asking questions, seeking feedback, sharing improvement ideas, and continuously learning.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

To thrive in this position, you will bring:

  • Experience in a School to Mine or similar early‑career development program.
  • The ability to follow procedures, apply practical judgement, and seek guidance when required.
  • A developing problem‑solving mindset, with the ability to learn through observation, experience, and trial and error.
  • Basic computer skills to support reporting and documentation.
  • Strong self‑awareness, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from feedback.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders and work productively within a team environment.
  • Drive, determination, and commitment to delivering high‑quality work aligned with Newmont’s values and safety culture.

Your work environment

This is a two year fixed term, full time position, operating Monday to Friday, with camp accommodation provided. Our employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

You will work closely with operational supervisors, superintendents, Health & Safety peers, site representatives, and reporting teams across the business. This is a practical, site‑based role that offers exposure to real‑world safety challenges, supported by experienced professionals who are committed to your development and success.
