About the Role
PNGUNRE invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated candidates for appointment as Tutor (Animal Breeding & Genetics) within the Department of Animal Science, School of Natural Resources.
This position supports the delivery of tutorials, practical classes, and applied learning activities in Animal Breeding and Genetics and related subject areas. The role contributes to undergraduate teaching, applied research, farm-based practicals, and community outreach activities aligned with the University’s mandate in sustainable livestock development and food security.
The successful appointee will work under the direction of a Lecturer and report to the Head of Department, Animal Science.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Lecturers in the preparation and delivery of tutorials and practical sessions in Animal Breeding and Genetics and related units.
- Plan and conduct laboratory and field-based practical classes in animal breeding, genetics, and livestock improvement.
- Support undergraduate students in special projects, practical reports, and applied learning activities.
- Participate in community outreach and extension programs related to livestock breeding and genetic improvement.
- Contribute to applied research activities within the Department of Animal Science.
- Assist in setting assessment tasks, marking scripts, and submission of student results in accordance with university procedures.
- Support the management and operation of university farm and livestock breeding activities.
- Attend departmental, school, and University meetings, seminars, and training as required.
- Ensure compliance with university quality assurance, academic, and administrative protocols.
- Undertake other duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Department and Dean of School.
Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in Animal Breeding, Animal Science, Veterinary Science, or a closely related discipline.
- Sound knowledge of livestock breeding programs, genetic improvement, and animal genetic resource management.
- Understanding of population genetics, quantitative genetics, molecular genetics, and genotype–environment interactions.
- Familiarity with animal genetic resource characterisation, documentation, and data management.
- Practical skills in animal classification, performance recording, and basic genetic data analysis.
- Competency in statistics, data analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in animal breeding, genetics laboratories, livestock production systems, or tertiary teaching in a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to support teaching and practical instruction in a higher education or technical training environment.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
- High standards of professionalism, punctuality, ethical conduct, and the ability to model integrity and strong moral values to students and colleagues.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic academic administration systems.

K36,288.00 – K55,632.00
