About the Role
PNGUNRE invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated candidates for appointment as Tutor (Technical Instructor) – Language, Communication & Ethics within the Department of Tourism & Hospitality.
This position supports the delivery of foundational communication and language competencies for tourism and hospitality students, with emphasis on English for Special Purposes (Tourism English), business and professional communication skills, and ethical conduct. The role contributes to teaching, research, curriculum development, and community engagement activities aligned with industry and University expectations.
The successful appointee will report directly to the Head of Department, Tourism & Hospitality.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, prepare, and deliver lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions to first- and second-year undergraduate students.
- Teach English for Special Purposes, including Tourism English, business communication, and professional communication skills.
- Conduct research in areas of specialisation and contribute to scholarly publications where appropriate.
- Review, propose, and design new courses in line with industry partner feedback and the University’s academic review cycle.
- Establish and maintain linkages with relevant industry bodies, including the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA), government departments, tourism operators, and research organisations to support teaching and research activities.
- Provide academic and technical expertise through the University’s community engagement and outreach programs.
- Support departmental teaching and administrative functions as directed by the Head of Department and the Dean of School.
Qualifications, Experience & Competency Profile
- Postgraduate qualification at Honours or Master’s degree level from a recognised university in English for Special Purposes (ESP), English Communication, Journalism, Education, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Lecturer or Tutor, or equivalent tertiary teaching experience in English or Communication Arts.
- Relevant post-qualification professional experience in research, consultancy, or applied work related to the tourism, travel, or hospitality industry.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver effective communication-focused teaching aligned to industry needs.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
- High standards of professionalism, punctuality, ethical conduct, and the ability to model integrity and strong moral values to students and colleagues.
Salary Range
Tutor (Technical Instructor)
K36,288.21 – K55,632.78
(plus applicable allowances and benefits)
