Company Overview
Tolu Minerals Limited has successfully completed its exploration phase and is transitioning into underground mining operations in Papua New Guinea, with full-scale production targeted for 2027. This role is part of the build-up of operational capability across the Mobile Maintenance Department as the company moves from development into full operational status.
Job Purpose
Reporting to the Mobile Maintenance Superintendent the Tyre Fitter is responsible for the inspection, fitting, repair, and management of tyres across Tolu Minerals' light vehicle and heavy mobile equipment fleet, ensuring tyres are maintained safely and equipment downtime due to tyre-related issues is minimized.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, fit, remove, and repair tyres on light vehicles and surface/underground heavy mobile equipment.
- Carry out routine tyre pressure checks, tread depth monitoring, and visual condition inspections across the fleet.
- Identify and report tyre damage, abnormal wear patterns, and safety hazards to the Mobile Maintenance Planner/Superintendent.
- Safely operate tyre-handling equipment (e.g. tyre handlers, cranes, hydraulic jacks) in accordance with site procedures.
- Maintain accurate tyre inventory and usage records, including tyre life tracking and rotation schedules.
- Carry out wheel and rim inspections, ensuring correct torque specifications and safe assembly practices are followed.
- Respond to tyre-related breakdowns across site, including underground where required, to minimize equipment downtime.
- Liaise with the Mobile Maintenance Planner on tyre stock levels, reordering, and scheduled tyre changeouts.
- Maintain a safe, organized tyre bay/workshop area, including safe storage and handling of tyres and rims.
- Comply strictly with safe work procedures for tyre fitting, given the high-risk nature of tyre and rim assembly work.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and training relevant to tyre management and handling.
Qualifications
- Trade certificate or recognized qualification in tyre fitting or demonstrated equivalent competency through experience.
- Current PNG driver's license.
- Underground mining induction/ticket required for underground work, or willingness to obtain.
Experience
- Minimum 2-3 years' experience as a tyre fitter, preferably servicing heavy mobile equipment in a mining or industrial environment.
- Experience handling large off-the-road (OTR) tyres and rims for heavy mining equipment preferred.
- Experience working safely with tyre-handling equipment and high-risk tyre/rim assembly tasks.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong practical skills in tyre fitting, repair, and rim assembly across a range of vehicle and equipment types.
- Sound understanding of tyre safety risks (e.g. rim separation, zipper failure) and safe work procedures to manage them.
- Good attention to detail for inspection, record-keeping, and inventory management.
- Physically capable of handling heavy tyres and components, with safe manual handling practices.
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision.
Working Conditions
- Underground and surface mining environment with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, dust, and confined spaces.
- Operates on a fixed roster of 19 days on / 9 days off.
- Required to work shift patterns including day and night shift as rostered.
- Must comply with all Tolu Minerals HSE policies, PNG Mining Safety regulations, and site-specific permit-to-work systems.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all times in designated areas.
