Summer Institute of Linguistics Papua New Guinea (SIL-PNG) has an exciting opportunity for highly motivated professionals, including recent graduates, to join our dynamic team at the Wewak Regional Centre. We are seeking individuals with a servant heart who are looking for a challenge and change of scenery. This vital role supports the work of Bible Translation.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The maintenance worker primary purpose is to support SIL-PNG Guesthouse and facilities. The role ensures that all buildings, genset/pumps, and ground are kept in optimal working condition to support the work of the Bible Translation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the SIL-PNG Wewak Guesthouse, office, houses, and outbuildings are maintained in good working condition (carpentry, plumbing, and small-scale electrical work).
  • Perform painting and termite control (spraying) for all flats and ceiling/attic spaces.
  • Apply workplace safety standards to all tasks, with specific attention to gas appliances, electrical maintenance, pest control chemicals, and work on elevated sites.
  • Carry out daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance checks.
  • Ensure outside contractors perform duties as requested to a high professional standard.
  • Maintain all tools and assets (hand/power tools, security lights, water pumps, genset, etc.) in good repair.
  • Report any missing or damages equipment to the supervisor on the same day.
  • Maintain stock of materials required for standard maintenance tasks.
  • Purchase supplies for village teams or SIL Departments as directed or approved by the manager.
  • Provide transport for Members and staff; operate a vehicle for maintenance tasks and supply runs.
  • Maintain knowledge of contingency plans and carry out specific actions if instructed by the Manager.
  • Maintain compliance with all organization policies and procedures

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of Grade 10 Certificate
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years of proven experience in general building maintenance or a related trade.
  • Must have formal vocational training (e.g. National Certificate or Trade Certificate) in a relevant field such as Carpentry, Plumbing, or electrical.
  • Must be fluent in speaking and reading both English and Tok Pisin.
  • Proven experience with hand/power tools and basic trades (plumbing/carpentry)
  • Must hold a current valid, PNG Driver’s License is essential.

  • A willingness to serve; ability to relate well with expats and nationals; and openness to ask questions when unsure
  • Able to maintain and keep strict confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy materials, tools, or machinery.
  • Comfortable climbing ladders and working at heights (attics/roofs) or in confined spaces.
  • Capable of performing manual labor
