Islands Petroleum is an independently owned fuel and lubes distributor, and the exclusive distributor for Mobil Lubricants in Papua New Guinea. Islands Petroleum operates bulk fuel and lubricant Depots and Distribution Centers in the Islands, Momase, Southern, and the Highlands regions. Our national head office is based in Kokopo.

We are currently seeking to hire a Workshop Superintendent to work under our Konebada Operations to be based at our Konebada Depot in Central Province.

The Role & Responsibilities

The Workshop Superintendent is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and efficient operation of the company’s workshop. This includes ensuring that all equipment, vehicles, and machinery are well-maintained and timely repaired to ensure safety and up to quality standards, while minimizing downtime and controlling costs. The role requires strong technical expertise, people management skills, and the ability to implement systems and processes that support a Culture of Safety, Efficiency and Operational Excellence.

  • Plan, organize, and oversee daily workshop operations.
  • Ensure workshop capacity is optimized to meet company and client demands.
  • Develop and manage preventive and corrective maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor productivity and efficiency of workshop staff, ensuring jobs are completed on time and within budget.
  • Ensure workshop tools, machinery, and facilities are properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Supervise and mentor mechanics, technicians, welders, and support staff Conduct performance reviews, identify training needs, and recommend development programs.
  • Maintain discipline and foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Recruit, train, and retain skilled workshop personnel.
  • Troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults.
  • Approve critical repairs and ensure workmanship meets company standards.
  • Oversee major overhauls, modifications, and installations of equipment.
  • Ensure the availability of spare parts and manage supplier relationships.
  • Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for maintenance.
  • Monitoring of fleet registration requirement such as (HS, SS, Rego number, etc)
  • Provide Technical assistance with fleet maintenance prevents down time
  • Other duties as intended for the position.

Candidate Requirements

The person we seek must have the following:

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Technology, or related discipline (preferred)
  • Trade certification (mechanical/automotive/heavy equipment) is highly regarded.
  • Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in a mechanical/automotive/heavy equipment workshop, with at least 5 years in a supervisory/management role
  • Strong knowledge of engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment
  • Proven track record in preventive maintenance planning and fleet management
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Sound knowledge of HSE standards and statutory requirements
